Envirosphere has extensive experience in environmental assessment in Atlantic Canada, ranging from biological input to projects ranging from the environmental impact assessment of the Sable Island Offshore Energy Project and other offshore projects, to full environmental assessments and screenings including Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) environmental assessments of coastal and water-related infrastructure and activities.
CEAA Screening Level Environmental Assessments, General. Rocky Lake Asphalt Transfer Facility. SLR Consulting, Halifax. 2009-2010.
EA of a proposed asphalt storage and transfer facility. Cape Forchu Tour Bus Turnaround. ABL Environmental, Dartmouth (2007). Assessment and fish habitat (HADD) approvals of the extension of a parking area at the lighthouse, Cape Forchu, Yarmouth County.
CEAA Screening Level Environmental Assessments for Bridge Replacements. SNC Lavalin (2008-ongoing). Environmental Assessments for reconstruction of highway bridges in Nova Scotia including fish habitat evaluation: Davison Bridge (Herbert River), IngramportBridge (Ingram River), Northport Bridge (Shinimicas River), Stewart Bridge (North River), Sangsters Bridge (Avon River) and Ferrona Bridge (East River).
Deconstruction of East and West Lights, Sable Island. SNC Lavalin (2010). Biological input to a screening level CEAA assessment of the dismantling of East and West Light towers, and a quonset hut, as well as removal of debris, focusing on species at risk, fisheries, wildlife, aquatic habitat, terrestrial habitat, and mitigation.
Carried out baseline and monitoring studies of key aquaculture species, water quality, seaweeds and seabed animal communities in nearshore areas of the pipeline corridor in the approaches to Country and Isaacs Harbours, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia.
Offshore Baseline Data Collection Assessment and Management. Mobil Oil Canada Limited. 1997-1998.
Designed and carried out a sampling program to collect information on seabed biological communities and contaminants on Sable Island Bank in the vicinity of proposed well sites as a basis for EEM design. The project included analysis of composition and abundance of biological communities, assessment of statistical properties of data, and maintenance of a computer database of biological and chemical data.
Assessing the Potential for Reducing Chlorine Disinfection at the Colchester Wastewater Treatment Facility. Horner and Associates. 1998.
Reviewed data from monitoring of fecal coliforms in the Salmon River estuary to determine recent impacts of different levels of treatment, and assessed potential consequences of reduction in disinfection.
Point Aconi Environmental Monitoring Program. Nova Scotia Power Inc. 1997.
Surveyed seaweeds and marine organisms in the vicinity of the Point Aconi Thermal Generating Plant in northern Cape Breton, as part of a long-term environmental monitoring program at the site. The study included video and photography transects of the seabed both extending offshore near the heated water outflow and intake, and in control areas, as well as assessment of species composition and abundance of seaweeds and invertebrates at benchmark sites.
Environmental Survey of the H.M.C.S Saguenay Marine Park. Environment Canada. 1995-96.
Carried out a diving survey of seabed characteristics, contaminant distribution in water and sediments, and patterns biological growth associated with a naval frigate sunk in Lunenburg Bay, Nova Scotia, as an attraction for divers. The study used shipboard and conventional sampling techniques as well as underwater video to provide baseline information to be used in future monitoring.
Environmental Assessments of Municipal Infrastructure Projects. 1993-2007.
Provided reviews of background information on environmental features and key resource species in the vicinity of communities throughout Nova Scotia as part of projects to upgrade sewage treatment facilities. Studies have been carried out for communities including: Avonport, Little Dover, River John,
Belliveau's Cove, Wedgeport Tusket, Lower West Pubnico, Tatamagouche, Great Village, Brookfield, Barrington, and Cheticamp. Clients include: R.H. Loucks Oceanology; W.N. Horner & Associates; CBCL; and EDM Limited.
Assessment and Evaluation of Ecological Features of Candidate Sites for the Kings County Solid Waste Management Facility. SNC-Lavalin. 1998.
Carried out field surveys and assessments of terrestrial and aquatic environments on three potential sites for a proposed regional waste management facility.
Assessment of Environmental Concerns -- Environmental Audit of Clare and Yarmouth Landfills. W.N. Horner & Associates, Truro, N.S. 1997.
Provided profiles of the natural environment in the vicinity of two landfills, as part of a process to select the site of a common landfill for counties in Southwestern Nova Scotia.
